Health coaches and nutritionists may find Dr. Saxena’s differentiation of common personas helpful. She has discovered in her practice that there are five different types of people seeking health advice. Understanding who they are will enable you to provide personalized guidance that will help them comply with your lifestyle advice.

Dr. Saxena: So the first persona is the Non-chef. This is the patient who when you start talking about eating healthy and maybe following an elimination diet or changing the ingredients in their food, they’re like, listen, “Dr. Saxena or doc, I don’t know how to cook. I don’t want to learn how to cook, is there some frozen version of this that I could just microwave?” This person, it’s not that they don’t enjoy cooking, maybe they’re too busy, but in some way they have no interest in taking on cooking. So they tend to eat out for convenience or they like packaged meals if you will. These individuals sometimes also skip meals because it’s easier to skip a meal than to have to think about cooking a whole, gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, this-free, that-free breakfast.
